Geography Field Trips

20th Jun 2019

Year 9

In May Year 9 pupils travelled to Colin Glen, in near Dunmurry, for a river study.  The aim was to investigate how river features change as the river flows downstream.  The fieldwork was carried out with the assistance of the field centre guide from the Colin Glen Trust.

Year 10

In June Year 10 pupils who have chosen GCSE Geography undertook a fieldtrip to Murlough Bay and Newcastle.  The aim of the trip was to firstly investigate how the dunes are managed for tourism and conservation by the National Trust, secondly to undertake a beach clean and thirdly to observe the various methods of coastal management at Newcastle used to prevent storm flooding and erosion of the coast.  Coastal management at Newcastle is major case study at GCSE.

Year 12

In April Year 12 students travelled to Belfast for an urban landuse study and data collection, in preparation for their GCSE Paper 3, Fieldwork Techniques.  The fieldtrip began with a visit to the Titanic Quarter to see first-hand the urban regeneration in this area, which is a topic on the GCSE Human Geography paper.  Data was then collected along a transect from High Street, along Royal Avenue and Great Victoria Street up to The Queen’s University of Belfast.  This data included a survey of changing landuse, building height and environmental quality of the urban area, all of which was then used in the GCSE examination.
