House Competition - Year 8 'It's a Knockout'
Friday 13th May may be believed to be unlucky for some however it certainly was not for Year 8 students as they were given the opportunity to spend the morning taking part in It’s a Knockout House Competitions at Ards Leisure Centre.
Students initially had their design and creativity skills tested, as well as their ability to work within mini teams representing their house. The challenge was to use equipment provided to protect an egg from a drop from Mr O’Connor’s head height, sounds simple? Think again! Students were only provided with some toilet paper, two balloons, ten lollipop sticks and some tape. Unfortunately some eggs did not survive more than 10 seconds into the design process, the excitement of engineering can get to us all! A total of twelve teams designs proved to be successful in protecting their egg, with an even representation of three teams from each house so the points were shared. However, there were also points awarded by members of staff for the most creative designs which saw teams represented by Sam Lightbody, Zak Magowan and Matilda Wray triumph with some excellent well thought out creations winning points for Mahee, Taggart and Ogilby.
After a short break students were then thrown into the heat of battle of an inter house dodgeball competition. This was fiercely contested with excellent participation from all pupils, however in competition there are always winners and those who fall just short. Ogilby couldn’t be beaten by any of their opposition and so they ran out clear winners, followed by Sketrick in 2nd who won two games, Mahee in 3rd and Taggart propping up the table.
Well done and congratulations to all pupils who took part, students represented the college extremely well in public and also represented their houses with all the enthusiasm and competitive spirit we have come to expect from Year 8.
