Mythology and Me - Year 10 Art Project

3rd Oct 2019

A four-week project connecting Strangford College and artist Lucy Turner with the symbolism and imagery of Mount Stewart

Mount Stewart is alive with imagery, symbolism, myth and legend; all the creative genius and whim of Edith, Lady Londonderry. Whether it is the images chosen to represent herself and her beloved husband on their sarcophagi in Tir na N’og, the herms in the formal garden depicting naughty monkeys atop sailors’ heads or the frequent melding of Greek and Celtic symbolism, story and architecture, there is plenty to turn the head and ignite the imagination.

This 4-week project aims to explore this use of mythology and symbolism and, in the light of how Edith Lady Londonderry chose to do it, to reflect on how we choose to represent ourselves today.

Today our Year 10 students had the opportunity to explore Mount Stewart, sketching and taking photographs to inspire their projects.

Each student will create a 3d response to the theme, creating something which captures an element of symbolism and imagery either reflecting something of themselves or of their engagement with Mount Stewart.

The students work will be displayed over the Winter months (November-March) in the mansion house at Mount Stewart as part of a community art exhibition which is a fantastic opportunity for our Year 10 students.

Watch this space as the students create their unique sculptures!
